Description: An economy depends not only on the internal factors of the country, such as the political and economic decisions of its rulers, and the behavior of its people, but also on external factors that we cannot control, such as natural disasters, economic crises, wars, among others. Oil prices cannot be controlled. Ecuador being an exporter of this good, and that throughout history the vast majority of its export earnings have depended on it, it is appropriate to carry out an investigation to see how a sudden change in these prices affects the economy of the country through the real Gross Domestic Product, and other variables such as the real effective exchange rate index and inflation, which can be affected by crude oil prices and in turn affect the GDP variable. An autoregressive vector model (VAR) is used, which allows the use of tools such as impulse-response to see shocks and decomposition of variance to observe in what percentage the one variable affects the other. As a result, it is observed that a shock in the price of oil affects GDP, and that there is no causal relationship with the other study variables.
