Item Estudio retrospectivo de masas cutáneas en perros (Canis lupus familiaris) diagnosticadas en un centro oncológico de referencia en la ciudad de Quito (2019-2024)(Universidad Técnica de Ambato Maestría En Medicina Veterinaria, 2026-03) Jiménez Villa, Marcelo Alejandro; Lozada Ortiz, Jenny PiedadThis study investigated the most frequently diagnosed cutaneous neoplasms in dogs presented to an oncology referral center in Quito, Ecuador (2019–2024). A retrospective study was conducted using data collected from medical records. The frequency of diagnosis of each cutaneous neoplasm (confirmed by cytology/histopathology) was recorded, along with individual information (age, breed, sex, anatomical location, and histologic grade of malignancy). The chi-square test was used to determine whether a statistically significant association existed between these variables, according to tumor type and lineage. In cases of cutaneous mast cell tumor, the chi-square test was also applied to assess statistically significant associations between patient age, breed, and sex and mast cell tumor grade according to the Kiupel and Patnaik classification systems. A variety of cutaneous tumors were identified (n = 107), with squamous cell carcinoma (26.17%), melanoma (19.63%), and hemangiosarcoma (14.95%) being the most frequent. Most affected patients were males and older than 6 years; the mean age at diagnosis was 8.33 years. The most affected breeds were Pit Bull, Schnauzer, Golden Retriever, and mixed-breed dogs. A statistically significant association was identified between tumor type and anatomical location, as well as histologic grade of malignancy. Furthermore, a statistically significant association was observed between tumor lineage and grade of malignancy. Regarding cutaneous mast cell tumour, this was among the most frequently diagnosed (n = 48). It occurred predominantly in male patients older than 6 years (mean age at diagnosis: 8.17 years). The predominant categories were low-grade (Kiupel system) and grade I and II (Patnaik system). The most affected breeds were French Bulldog, Schnauzer, and mixed-breed dogs. No statistically significant association was found between Kiupel and Patnaik grading categories and patient age, breed, or sex. This database provides valuable information for veterinarians to consider these neoplasms among their differential diagnoses during oncologic clinical evaluation of canine patients, as these masses are commonly encountered. Additionally, this research underscores the importance of analyzing historical records of diseases that affect dogs, such as cancer, as they contribute to a deeper understanding of the epidemiology of specific diseases within a defined population.
