    Identificación molecular de Escherichia coli O157 H7 aislada en carne de pollo

    Escherichia coli O157 is a foodborne pathogen capable of causing severe gastrointestinal diseases in humans, including hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. The aim of this study was to molecularly identify Escherichia coli O157 isolated from chicken meat marketed in Ambato through the detection of the virulence genes Stx1, Stx2, rfbE, and fliC. A total of 31 bacterial isolates previously identified and preserved at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Technical University of Ambato were analyzed. Molecular detection of the target genes was performed using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique, followed by electrophoresis on 2% agarose gel for all genes and visualization of the amplified products using a transilluminator. The results showed that the stx1 gene was not detected in any of the isolates; however, the Stx2 gene was identified in 5 isolates (16.1%). Likewise, no amplification of the rfbE gene was observed in any of the samples, whereas the fliC gene was detected in all 31 isolates (100%). These findings suggest the presence of strains with virulence potential associated with the production of Shiga toxin type 2 and the H7 flagellar antigen, although without molecular evidence of the O157 somatic antigen. This research is framed within the field of food safety and public health, and its scientific contribution lies in expanding epidemiological knowledge and strengthening microbiological surveillance strategies for poultry-derived food products.
