Resumen : The cognitive functions of the human being tend to deteriorate over time or due to the presence of pathological conditions, often affecting older adults. Thus, the objective of this research was to determine the relationship between fine and gross motor skills with cognitive functions in the elderly of Picaihua Tungurahua through physiotherapeutic intervention. Since, there is a higher prevalence in older adults due to their lifestyle and their high percentage of illiteracy. An intervention protocol was applied with a sample of 58 older adults, both men and women aged between 65 and ≥87, for 28 sessions, 3 times a week and each 40-45 minutes for 12 weeks. The evaluation was carried out at the beginning and at the end of the treatment through the Mini Mental State Examination. This treatment consisted of exercises of working memory, fine and gross motor skills, calculation, orientation and concentration, managing to increase from 1 to 5 points in the applied test according to the initial patients’ clinical conditions.
Descripción : Las funciones cognitivas del ser humano tienden a deteriorarse con el tiempo o por la presencia de condiciones patológicas, afectando con frecuencia a los adultos mayores. De tal forma que, el objetivo general de esta investigación fue determinar la relación entre las habilidades motoras finas y gruesas con las funciones cognitivas en las personas de la tercera edad de la parroquia Picaihua a través de la intervención fisioterapéutica. Debido a que existe una mayor prevalencia en los adultos mayores por su estilo de vida y su alto porcentaje de analfabetismo. Para este estudio se aplicó un protocolo de intervención con una muestra de 58 adultos mayores tanto hombres como mujeres en edades comprendidas entre 65 y ≥87. Durante 28 sesiones, 3 veces a la semana y cada una de 40-45 minutos por 12 semanas. Donde se realizó la evaluación al inicio y al final del tratamiento a través del Mini Mental State Examination. Dicho tratamiento se basó en ejercicios para trabajar memoria, motricidad fina y gruesa, cálculo, orientación y concentración logrando subir de 1 a 5 puntos en el test aplicado de acuerdo a la condición clínica inicial de los pacientes.
