Resumen : The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the performance and nitrogen retention in Landrace sows of an average weight of 47 kg. This research was carried out at the facilities pig farms of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Technical University of Ambato The variables evaluated were yield, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention. The treatments used were: T1 without inclusion, T2 5% and T3 10% inclusion of Alpiste in the diet. A randomized block design with three treatments and five replicates was used, as well as an analysis of variance and Tukey test at 5%, using SAS statistical software SAS 2002. For the CVMS, CVMO and CVPC values for T3 were significantly different (P = 0.0001) to the other treatments, with values of 2280; 203.50 and 38.92 g respectively, however, the CVFDN was significantly higher (P = 0.0001) in T1 (65.89 g) with respect to T2 and T3. The PI values presented similar behavior (P = 0.9910), while for PF and GDP the value for T3 was significantly higher (p = 0.0001), with a value of 81.38 kg and 748.44 Gr. The AC showed no differences (p = 0.05) between treatments. For GDI, the values between treatments did not show differences (p = 0.11211) whereas GDF was lower (p = 0.0015) for T2 and T3 with values of 0.81 and 0.82cm correspondingly. DMS and BMD present significant differences between treatments (P = 0.0149 and P = 0.0051); Where the T3 treatment had a higher digestibility with values of 82.74% and 90.02%, respectively. DFDN was higher (P = 0.0001) for T1 (61.96%) and T2 (61.54%). Regarding the DPC the highest (P = 0.0007) digestibility was observed for T3 (52.65%). RN gr / day showed superiority (P = 0.0061) for T3 (41.46%) in relation to the rest of treatments. Based on the above, it is concluded that the inclusion of 10% canary seed in diets is viable for a better productive yield and meat quality without producing negative effects on the animal.
