Descripción : The extrinsic motivation comes from external incentives of a person. A student motivated extrinsically learns only by receiving a reward, congratulation, or avoid punishment. This type of motivation is important in online learning, a new modality, due to the COVID-19 viral phenomenon. Therefore, the present research was developed with the topic “Extrinsic Motivation and Online Learning in second year students of Basic General Education, parallel “A” of the Juan León Mera “La Salle” Educational Unit in the city of Ambato, in the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year”, with the aim of determining the influence of extrinsic motivation in online learning. The research is field, because it allowed observing the behavior of the students to know the reality of the problem; and bibliographic-documentary, because the variables and their respective dimensions were theoretically conceptualized, with the analysis of different investigations such as theses, scientific articles and books. The methodological approach follows a qualitative focus, by directly observing the virtual classes of the students and a quantitative focus, with the application of surveys and obtaining numerical-statistical data. The population consisted of 28 students with ages ranging between 5 and 6 years, to whom a questionnaire with 11 closed questions was applied. In addition, to corroborate the students' answers, a survey with 10 closed questions was applied to the docents, who teach the basic subjects. One of the most important results was that students feel greater interest in learning when they are congratulated and recognized by their docents, for this reason it is concluded that they have a high level of extrinsic motivation and docents are recommended to continue using motivational phrases and incentives to keep motivation high.
