Evaluación del aceite esencial de canela (cinnamomum zeylanicum) en pollos de engorde cobb 500 infectados con salmonella typhimurium

Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of cinnamon essential oil (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) in chickens infected with Salmonella typhimurium ATCC® 14028 ™ *. The oil was obtained by the steam distillation method subsequently subjected to decantation and storage in refrigeration. For the infecting inoculum 5 colonies of Salmonella typhimurium were used in 10 cc of brain heart broth, incubated for 24 hours, standardizing it to 0.5 of the MacFarland scale 1,5x108 UFC, with the help of a hypodermic syringe, 1 ml was orally administered to each bird daily during the fourth and fifth week of age of the chickens. A volume of 900 ml of inoculum is required. The trial handled a total of 81 Cobb 500 broilers which were distributed in 3 treatments, (3 cubicles per treatment and 9 chickens per cubicle). The treatments consisted in the addition of different concentrations of cinnamon essential oil to (50%, 70% and 90%), using as solvent Tween-80. They were administered 2 drops daily of each treatment orally in week seven, eight and nine of the chickens' age. To verify the absence of Salmonella typhimurium, these birds were subjected to a microbiological diagnosis by means of an organ pool (liver and spleen) for which necropsies were performed, which were distributed in 27 necropsies each week (seven, eight and nine), ending With the 81 birds of the trial, all the samples were typed in the Microgen GN A System, obtaining the total absence of Salmonella in week nine post-application, in addition a clear effectiveness of cinnamon essential oil was observed at concentrations of 70%, therefore cinnamon oil did its antimicrobial activity in this trial.
